Knee Pads and Knee Pad Trousers: Protecting Your Joints

Knee Pads and Knee Pad Trousers: Protecting Your Joints

If your work involves kneeling—flooring, tiling, plumbing, electrical work—protecting your knees isn't optional. Knee damage is cumulative and often irreversible.

Why Knee Protection Matters

Repeated kneeling causes bursitis, arthritis, and permanent cartilage damage. These conditions are painful, limit mobility, and can end careers. Prevention is far easier than treatment.

Types of Knee Pads

Strap-on knee pads are versatile and work with any trousers but can slip and restrict circulation. Insert knee pads fit into trouser pockets, staying in place better and distributing pressure more evenly. Built-in knee pads offer maximum integration but can't be removed.

Knee Pad Materials

Foam pads are lightweight and comfortable for light-duty work. Gel pads conform to surfaces and provide excellent cushioning for moderate use. Hard-shell pads offer maximum protection for heavy-duty work on rough surfaces.

Choosing Knee Pad Trousers

Look for trousers with reinforced knee pad pockets positioned correctly for your height. Pockets should be adjustable or available in different positions. Check that pockets are large enough for your preferred pad type.

Proper Positioning

Knee pads should cover your kneecap and surrounding area completely. Test by kneeling—pads shouldn't shift or leave gaps. Adjust pocket position or strap tension as needed.

Maintenance

Remove and clean knee pads regularly. Dirt and debris reduce cushioning and can damage trouser pockets. Replace worn pads promptly—compressed foam and gel lose protective properties.
